With an ambition for building society and economy, based on science and innovations, budget of 80 billion euro, considerably simple structure, compliant with specific goals and a variety of tools and actions, the EU Framework program for research and innovations Horizon 2020 is a major instrument for achieving sustainable development. The current paper aims at presenting the basic characteristics and parameters of the program, reviewing its implementation for the 2014- June 2019 period and outlining the actions needed to be undertaken for improvement of  ts impact.
